The Book of Boba Fett Ending Explained

This STAR WARS: THE BOOK OF BOBA FETT review contains spoilers.

With Tatooine and Boba’s soul on the line, the finale of The Book of Boba Fett had a lot to do. Not only did “In the Name of Honor” need to settle the score between Boba Fett, the Pyke Syndicate, and Cad Bane but it also had a bit of The Mandalorian baggage to carry. Would Grogu choose to stay with Luke Skywalker and complete his Jedi training or would he reunite with Din Djarin and follow the path of the Mandalorians?

In the end, the daimyo of Mos Espa was victorious, with Cad Bane defeated in a duel, and Grogu came zipping back to Tatooine on Luke’s X-wing, finally ending speculation about whether we’d ever see our dynamic bounty hunting duo together again. But The Book of Boba Fett still leaves a few loose ends.

Here’s what we could piece together about the finale’s biggest mysteries after all was said and done:

Is Cad Bane Really Dead?

Just as Boba Fett and Fennec Shand came back from the dead, Cad Bane‘s downfall in the desert might only be temporary. It’s clear that someone can survive a wound like the one Boba struck him under the right conditions in the galaxy far, far away, even on a relatively backwater planet like Tatooine. After all, the Modifier worked his augmentation magic on Fennec and could probably do the same for whatever part of Cad Bane has been left broken.

No one seems in a hurry to pick the fallen bounty hunter up, though. His employers, the Pykes, are scattered. However, during the Clone Wars era, Bane had a crew of bounty hunters who worked with him, and it’s easy to see how one of them might have found him after this fight and rushed him to safety off-screen. (Dengar did something similar for a severely injured Boba Fett after the latter’s Sarlacc escape in the old Legends continuity.)

One of those allies in particular, Embo, would fit with The Book of Boba Fett‘s aesthetic and was mentioned in Aftermath: Empire’s End, part of the same book series in which Cobb first appeared. Like Ahsoka, Embo is a character who started out in The Clone Wars, a text which the live-action shows borrow heavily from.

Either way, it’s difficult to believe Cad Bane is actually dead after everything we’ve seen in the past seven weeks!

Is Cobb Vanth Alive?

Most definitely. Timothy Olyphant’s marshal is safe in Boba Fett’s bacta tank, so he’s likely to appear again at some point. The post-credits scene even shows that the Modifier ready to perform some surgery, so Cobb will have some cool new machine parts the next time we see him.

It’s unclear for now how he fits into Disney’s slate of Star Wars shows after The Book of Boba Fett. However, with Cara Dune out of the running for the reportedly on hiatus Rangers of the New Republic show, could the popular Cobb step in to headline his own story? We have some theories here.

What’s next for Boba Fett and Fennec Shand?

Now firmly the leaders of both the citizens and crime families of Mos Espa, Boba and Fennec seem to get a happy ending here. Boba’s titles are many now: daimyo of Mos Espa and the leader of “the Fett gotra (clan).” But there are still a few possible loose ends.

With the Pyke Syndicate out of the way, could the Hutts return for another stab at getting their palace back? Or could Boba and Fennec try to expand their criminal empire to Mos Eisley and even Hutt Space? There are plenty of directions the crime lord storyline could go in a potential second season.

Of course, there’s also the larger Star Wars story unfolding across The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and the upcoming Ahsoka series, which all seem to be leading back to Mandalore and the return of Grand Admiral Thrawn. Being of Mandalorian blood, could Boba Fett play a part in the bigger conflicts to come? And if so, will Fennec follow or go back to life as a bounty hunter? We’d love for Ming-Na Wen to get her own series too, actually…

What’s next for Din and Grogu?

The titular Mandalorian’s future direction is a bit more clear. After being banished by his Mandalorian tribe for showing his face to Grogu, Din needs to perform a ritual at a sacred pool in the ruins of Mandalore in order to be inducted back into his found family. He also still has the Darksaber, which makes him the rightful ruler of the Mandalorian people by creed, but does he even want that responsibility? It also remains to be seen how this has all affected his partnership with Bo-Katan Kryze, who covets the weapon and wants use it to liberate Mandalore herself. There’s likely a conflict brewing between these two in The Mandalorian season 3.

Meanwhile, Moff Gideon is in New Republic custody for now, but may still have designs on Grogu. If he’s off the table as a villain, the next most likely candidate is Grand Admiral Thrawn. We know from The Mandalorian season 2 that Ahsoka is searching for the alien Imperial tactician. Executive producer Dave Filoni already has a template for bringing Thrawn in as a later-season villain as he did in Rebels so there’s every chance he is re-introduced in this season before becoming the main villain of another series…

What’s next for Luke Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano?

The Jedi story hinted at in The Book of Boba Fett tugs on a lot of different threads. Ahsoka is looking for Grand Admiral Thrawn not only because he is an Imperial war criminal who should be brought to justice. He also disappeared along with Ahsoka’s friend and student Ezra Bridger, a young Jedi hero who fought against the Empire in the early days of the Rebellion. What happened to Ezra is one of the biggest questions still unanswered, and with his friend Sabine Wren expected to appear in the Ahsoka TV series, it’s likely we’ll finally see this storyline revisited.

Meanwhile, Luke Skywalker is setting up for the disaster we know will lead to the events of the Sequel Trilogy. Eventually, Ben Solo will join Luke’s academy with other students and be tempted by Emperor Palpatine masquerading as Snoke, starting his transformation into Kylo Ren. In the meantime, Luke is also still searching for Jedi artifacts and sacred texts, and at some point after discovers the compass that will lead him to the first Jedi temple on Ahch-To. There’s a lot of room to explore here, but with Luke also one of the saga’s most important characters, the shows might continue to use him sparingly, especially if Disney is intent to make him an expensive CGI character instead of finally re-casting the role.

Is Max Rebo safe? Is he alright?

We don’t know! Max Rebo’s current gig at Garsa Fwip’s sanctuary came to an abrupt end when the Pykes blew up the building in “From the Desert Comes a Stranger.” That said, it didn’t seem like Max Rebo was performing that day, just his Bith band mates. So it’s possible Max Rebo lives? Fingers crossed.
